Google Opens Sales Office in the UK

New Operation Enables Google to Target UK Advertising Market

LONDON, United Kingdom – September 27, 2001 – Google Inc., developer of the award-winning Google search engine, today announced that it has opened an office in London, England, to meet the online advertising market demands in the UK. As part of the company’s charter in the UK, it will work to deliver unrivalled targeted advertising programmes and search services, and help thousands of advertisers to reach end-users without affecting the user’s overall search experience.

Google works closely with its advertisers to develop text-based ads which match users’ search queries, resulting in a highly targeted service that consistently produces an average clickthrough rate that is four-to-five times higher than the industry average. The Google platform reaches a sophisticated and relevant audience, and displays highly visible but non-intrusive advertisements on the search results page. This ensures that users only receive information that is completely relevant to their search terms.

Omid Kordestani, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Sales for Google said: “Google recognises that the UK is an important market for advertising opportunities and that as internet users become increasingly sophisticated, we have to find more efficient ways to target them. Google is a results-focused company, and we aim to deliver the best search results to users while also delivering targeted advertising information with our text-only model. We are very excited about the opportunities that exist in Europe and will expand our operations in the United Kingdom in line with our growth as a company.”

Google has employed a dedicated advertising sales team in London and has appointed Kate Burns as Head of Advertising Sales in the UK. Burns has extensive experience in this market, and was responsible for the ad sales divisions at AltaVista, ZDNet/Yahoo! and DoubleClick. She is charged with growing Google’s client base and generating UK ad sales revenue. Google’s UK advertisers currently include Lloyds, Screentrade, Volvo, Ford, BT Genie, OXL.com.

The award-winning Google search engine serves about 120 million searches per day, with approximately half of these searches performed on the company’s web site at www.google.com. In the UK, Google was listed as the eighth top web property, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, August 2001. The company also owns 40 per cent of referral traffic to internet sites in the UK, according to a September 2001 StatMarket report. Google offers a wide variety of custom search service products and currently provides search services to more than 130 companies in more than 30 countries.
